Hello, my name is Ute, pronounced “oo-teh”.
I was born in Austria and raised in Australia. And no, my name has nothing to do with the Aussie car—the ute!
Although who would have guessed that after arriving in Australia, I’d end up sharing my name with one of Australia’s most iconic cars? It still makes me laugh. I mean, how many people can say they’re named after a ute? And for the record, funny as it may be, I will never answer to being called ute!! Because that just isn't my name...
I studied Textile Design at RMIT University, graduating with a BA, and began my career freelancing, designing for well-known fashion, bed linen and homewares brands. Including several years as an in-house textile designer with Sportscraft Consolidated before I ventured out on my own.
In 1995, I established my own studio, Camilion Designs. The name is a playful twist on “chameleon”, reflecting my ability to adapt to different briefs, styles and creative challenges. For eighteen years, my studio was based in the heart of Smith Street, Fitzroy, Melbourne, a well-known, vibrant and creative area. In 2016, I packed up the studio and relocated to Melbourne’s outer east, where my creative journey took a new direction.
These days, I work from my repurposed portable studio, which I call "The Design Cube".....A new chapter in my creative journey.
